Lynnie Carson: Everything in Between

We’ve been lucky enough to hear the new album Everything In Between from the brilliant singer/ songwriter Lynnie Carson…and it’s gorgeous. It’s Lynnie’s first album since Eyes Kissed With Goodbyes in 2012. Since then she has been awarded the Danny Kyle Open Stage award at Celtic Connections, released 2 singles and written a World Cup anthem for the Scottish Women’s Football team where she sang with Glasgow musical stalwarts Horse McDonald and Monica Queen.

On Saturday 4th July Lynnie will perform a live set on Facebook of covers and original material to raise awareness of the Save Our Venues campaign and promote the album.

Everything In Between is released on July 3rd and available on all digital stores: iTunes, Spotify, Amazon MP3, Deezer etc

In the years between the release of Eyes Kissed Goodbye and penning football songs  Lynnie was writing and recording a new set of solo material — songs that flew in the face of a bouncy, anthemic world cup song and dealt with such sobering subjects as addiction, heartache and cancer.

Recording began 3 years ago at La Chunky Studios with her band The Hawking Gimmicks and Neil Young aficionado, Johnny Smillie, at the desk. Johnny’s signature sound, along with the guitar playing of Eric Lindsay (Whiteout), lend  the album a distinctly ’70s feel. Lynnie said:

“I wanted to record an album that sounded like the ones I know and love. I sent Johnny tracks by Frazey Ford and cited Neil Young’s Harvest as an influence too. We spoke about snare sound and guitar parts and I felt like he understood what I was looking for.

“The same goes for the sound and style of Eric’s guitar playing and John Milne’s brass parts. I had ideas of what the brass should sound like based on the live version of ‘The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down’ in The Last Waltz but that was just a reference point for John, he went away and wrote these beautiful, fitting brass parts. It was a big project for me to pull together but with the help of a crowdfunding campaign and a lot of gigging we got it made and everyone got paid.

“The first single released from the album was ‘Wasted Love’ back in January 2018 before the rest of the album was actually finished. The song was recorded at Rocket Science studios with Bad Mannequins’ Ross Hamilton at the helm. A virtuoso bass player, engineer and producer extraordinaire, Ross played everything on the track. It is testament to his talents that both this and ‘The Day She Died’, which he also recorded, can sit sonically with the other songs on the album, even though they were recorded using a full band and brass section.”

The accompanying video for the single was shot by Glasgow film maker Jo Pagan and features actor Clare Gray.

The second single ‘Love Is…’ released in August of the same year gained airplay on The Roddy Hart Show, The Iain Anderson Show and The Billy Sloan Show, all on BBC Radio Scotland, and showcases those signature guitar and brass parts so vital to the overall sound of the album.

‘Everything In Between’ will have a physical release once venues re-open across the country and will include a special bonus track not available as a part of the digital release.
